  • Time for a new role!

Most recently I have accepted a new role with my employer. It was a promotion for all intents and purposes. In some ways it also feels like a demotion because of everything I have to learn. It’s hard going from one area where everything was well known to you – to a new area where you have only a slight hold of everything going on around you.

What is helping me during this transition? Falling back on my leadership skills. This is a must. Let those who have been doing it guide you. Work with them to ensure that you are just trying to learn and not belittle. Be sure your approach is one of openness and understanding.

In my role – I am relying a lot on my team. I have tried to be very open with my new group that I need their help. Over time I hope they will also understand that I am not perfect. But that I do try.

And that is the key – time. Don’t get lost in what you don’t know right NOW. Give it time; focus on what you DO KNOW. Work hard to learn what you do not. Along the way empower those around you to use their knowledge and allow them to shine. It’s great when others rise to the challenge because it’s their time and their leader is giving them room.

    What would a leader do?
~ Let others take some of the work until you’re up to speed – it’s a learning experience for both of you!
~ Accept that you can not learn everything over night and allow yourself the time to do it right.
~ Understand this is your role; you do not need prove anything. You need to lead.
