  • To grow up – first grow down

One of my most treasured skills at this time is my ability to look within myself. This ability has allowed me to see some things I really like and some things I need to work on. It has gained me strength for the things I love to do and intolerance for those that I know I do but do not like. As a result, I have been able make strides in my personal learning and take my career in a whole new direction.

The ability to honestly and quietly reflect on one’s life is one of the most powerful tools for personal growth.
    -Richard Carlson

This quote and others like it are very true – but not complete. What they fail to express is the need to be open to the results of your reflection and be willing to do something about it. I have talked to many people who are interested in improving and want to succeed. You provide them feedback and they nod along agreeing with every word you say. They create an action plan, set a target date and then… NOTHING. This is not surprising to me, because I use to be the same way. That is not to say I am perfect now, I am better then I was before. But the reason I say it’s not surprising is because motivation is easier in the moment – you need character strength and will to be motivated every day. You need to want to grow and develop and put that action plan into place. So the next time you feel yourself nodding along, look inside yourself and make sure that all of you is nodding and ready to go to that next level.

    What would a leader do?
~ Take time for yourself – ask the hard questions about what you really want for yourself and your family. Do not fear the answers.
~ Be open to feedback and encourage it. Feedback is your lifeline, accept it, thank the person for providing it and act on it when possible.
~ Do not fear growth and learning! If you are not someone who loves college classes, look into many of the alternative day leadership / management courses that are out there.
~ Use your library card! It is the best way to find management books that could work for you without spending a lot of money.
